About the Regency Era
The historical and political definition of the Regency is the period from 1811 to 1820 when George, Prince of Wales, governed the country as ‘Regent’ during the madness of his father George III. While it only spanned 9 years, the period was marked by a flurry of new musical works.
Regency attire and costumes are characterized by a high, empire waist line for ladies and breeches and tailcoats for gentlemen. Typical ladies’ style also included many layers of petticoats, bonnets, and gloves. Films based on any of Jane Austen’s novels and are excellent examples of this period in history. For extra flair, check out the popular Netflix hit series “Bridgerton” based on Julia Quinn’s books.
